The Huia Coin Pouch

The Huia is a leather coin pouch named after the small settlement at the head of the Manukau Harbour, west of our workshop. The bird the village was named for carried tail feathers worn by people of rank, kept in a waka huia, a shallow carved box a family used for the few small things worth holding onto.

The Huia is a single piece of leather folded into that same shallow open shape, stitched by hand at two corners and closed with a single press stud. Coins sit in one layer where you can see them, which makes paying with cash quick rather than a fumble at the counter. Folded shut it takes almost no room in a jacket pocket, a glovebox or the corner of a handbag.

We cut it from vegetable tanned full grain leather and burnish the edges by hand instead of painting them, so there is no coating to crack or peel away later.

It also suits guitar picks, earbuds, a spare key, cufflinks or a ring you take off for work.
