About Zando

Who are you?

ZANDO is a small New Zealand studio handcrafting leather wallets, belts, watch straps, and everyday carry essentials. It was founded by Haroon in 2020 and is run from a home workshop in Glen Eden, Auckland. Every piece is made by hand, one at a time, there's no factory and no production line behind it.

Who founded Zando?

ZANDO was founded by Haroon (full name: Haroon Mustafa). He started the studio in 2020 during lockdown as a personal leathercraft project, then formally launched ZANDO as a business in 2023. The full founder story is on the About page.

Is Zando a New Zealand brand?

Yes. ZANDO is New Zealand-owned and New Zealand-made. The studio is based in Glen Eden, Auckland, and every piece is handcrafted on-site. We do not outsource any part of the making process offshore.

Where are your products made?

Every ZANDO piece is cut, stitched, and finished by hand in Auckland, New Zealand. The workshop is on Albionvale Road in Glen Eden, a suburb of West Auckland. Nothing is sent offshore for any stage of production.

Where is the Zando workshop located?

The workshop is on Albionvale Road in Glen Eden, Auckland. It's a private home workshop, not a storefront - we don't offer in-person visits or local pickup. All orders are placed through the website and shipped to your address.

When was Zando founded?

ZANDO began in 2020 as a personal leathercraft project during lockdown, when Haroon made his first wallet for himself. It was formally launched as a business in 2023 out of the Glen Eden workshop. Both years are part of the story on the About page.

Can I visit the Zando workshop in person?

No. ZANDO is an online-only retailer and the workshop is a private home studio, not a storefront. Local pickup is not offered. All orders ship to the address you provide at checkout.

Leather & Materials

What leather do you use?

Full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather exclusively. Full-grain means the top layer of the hide is left intact without sanding or artificial texturing. Vegetable tanning uses tree bark and plant extracts rather than the chrome chemicals used in most mass-produced leather, which is why it takes weeks rather than days to produce.

Is Zando leather full-grain or genuine leather?

Full-grain. Full-grain is the highest grade of leather, the natural top layer of the hide is left as it is, without being sanded down or stamped with an artificial texture to hide natural marks. "Genuine leather" is a lower grade that has been corrected or sanded. We never use genuine-grade leather.

Is Zando leather vegetable-tanned?

Yes. All ZANDO leather is vegetable-tanned, using tree bark and plant extracts rather than chrome chemicals. This slower, traditional method is the reason the leather develops a patina and ages well over years of use. It costs more than chrome tanning, but it's the only method we've found that actually ages properly instead of just wearing out.

Where does Zando source its leather from?

Leather is sourced from four established tanneries: Wickett & Craig in the United States, and Badalassi Carlo, Conceria Walpier, and Maryam in Italy. All four are vegetable-tanning specialists with multi-generational track records. Getting hides from the other side of the world to New Zealand isn't quick, but it means every piece starts from leather we trust before it's even cut into.

Which tanneries does Zando use?

Wickett & Craig (USA), Badalassi Carlo (Italy), Conceria Walpier (Italy), and Maryam (Italy). These are named on the About page because we believe customers should know where their leather comes from - not just "premium leather" as a marketing phrase.

Is Zando leather sustainable or ethically sourced?

We use vegetable-tanned leather, which relies on plant tannins rather than the chrome chemicals used in most industrial leather production. The hides come from tanneries with long track records of responsible practice. Vegetable tanning is slower and more expensive than chrome tanning, but produces leather that ages properly rather than wearing out - which means less waste over the long term.

Is Zando leather real leather or vegan leather?

Real, full-grain, vegetable-tanned cowhide. We do not produce vegan leather goods. If you're looking for plant-based alternatives, there are other brands doing that work well, it's just not what we do.

Craft & Process

Are Zando wallets handmade or machine-made?

100% handmade. Every piece is cut, stitched, and finished by hand by Haroon in the Glen Eden workshop. There's no factory, no machine line, and no outsourcing. The only powered tool used is a skiving machine for thinning leather edges, every other stage is done by hand.

What stitching does Zando use?

Saddle stitching, a traditional hand-stitching technique where two needles pass through each hole from opposite directions, using a single thread. This is different from the lock-stitch used by sewing machines, which can unravel if a single thread breaks.

What is saddle stitching and why does Zando use it?

Saddle stitching is a hand-stitching method that uses two needles and a single thread passing through each hole from both sides. Unlike a machine lock-stitch, a saddle stitch holds even if one thread eventually gives way, because the adjacent stitches remain locked. We use it because it produces a stronger, longer-lasting seam than machine stitching, and because it's the traditional way these pieces were always meant to be made.

How many stitches per inch in a Zando wallet?

Roughly six and a half stitches per inch (6.5 spi). This density balances strength with the natural hand of vegetable-tanned leather. Too few stitches and the seam is weak; too many and the leather gets perforated like a stamp.

Does Zando use edge paint or burnished edges?

We don't use edge paint. All edges are burnished by hand, going over the same edge again and again until it holds a natural shine with no coating added. It takes longer than paint, but produces a cleaner finish that holds up over years of use rather than months. Edge paint tends to chip and peel; a burnished edge just gets smoother.

How long does it take to make a Zando wallet?

Because every piece is handcrafted to order, production takes up to two weeks before the item ships. That's cutting, saddle-stitching, edge burnishing, and finishing, all by one person. We don't chase volume, which is part of why we never have a warehouse of ready-made stock.

What's the difference between handmade and handcrafted leather goods?

For us, the two terms mean the same thing because every stage, cutting, saddle-stitching, edge burnishing, and finishing, is done by hand. Some brands use "handcrafted" to mean "finished by hand but cut or stitched by machine." We don't do that. If you'd like to see the process, the About page describes it in detail.

Why are your wallets different?

Each one is handmade one at a time by Haroon, built for purpose, and reinforced where mass-produced wallets usually fail, the card slots, the fold, the stitching at stress points. We use full-grain vegetable-tanned leather from named tanneries, saddle-stitched at 6.5 stitches per inch, with hand-burnished edges. None of that is fast. None of it is cheap. But it's why a ZANDO wallet is built to age, not to wear out.

Durability & Aging

How long does a Zando wallet last?

Years of daily use, not months. The combination of full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, saddle stitching (which holds even if one thread breaks), and hand-burnished edges means the wallet is designed to age properly rather than wear out. We don't think leather goods should need replacing every couple of years. Something made properly should last, and look better the longer you carry it.

Will the leather patina?

Yes, and that's the point. Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and develops a patina wherever it's handled, carried in a bag, or exposed to sunlight. No two pieces end up looking the same because no two people use them the same way. We don't seal or coat the leather to stop this from happening. The reason we use it in the first place is so it can age properly and start to look like it belongs to you, not like it just came out of a box.

How long does vegetable-tanned leather take to darken?

A wallet carried every day will look noticeably different after one year of use compared to one used occasionally. The darkening is gradual and accelerates with handling, sunlight, and time in a pocket or bag. You'll see the first signs within a few weeks; the full character takes years.

Are Zando wallets durable enough for daily use?

Yes, that's exactly what they're built for. The full-grain leather, saddle-stitched seams, and burnished edges are specifically chosen to withstand years of daily carry. We don't make "special occasion" wallets; we make everyday companions.

Is full-grain leather better than genuine leather?

Yes. Full-grain is the highest grade, retaining the natural top layer of the hide with its tight fiber structure. "Genuine leather" is a lower grade that has been sanded or corrected to hide imperfections, which weakens the fiber structure. We only use full-grain leather because it's the only grade that ages well.

Why are handmade leather wallets more expensive?

Because each one is cut, saddle-stitched, and burnished by hand by a single maker in Auckland, using full-grain vegetable-tanned leather from named Italian and American tanneries. Mass-produced wallets use chrome-tanned leather, machine lock-stitching, and edge paint, all faster and cheaper, but less durable. The price reflects hours of skilled labor and materials that age well rather than wear out. You're paying for the years the wallet will last, not the minutes it took to make.

Care & Maintenance

How do I look after my wallet?

Keep it dry, avoid direct heat, and condition it lightly every few months with a neutral leather balm. Avoid prolonged moisture and keep it away from synthetic cleaners. That's it, vegetable-tanned leather is genuinely low-maintenance as long as you don't abuse it.

Can vegetable-tanned leather get wet?

It should be kept dry. Prolonged moisture can stain or warp the leather, especially in the first month of use when it's most porous. If it does get wet, let it air-dry away from direct heat. Don't blow-dry it, don't put it on a radiator, and don't try to speed up the drying process, that causes more damage than the water did.

How do I clean dirt off a natural veg-tan leather wallet?

Wipe gently with a dry or barely-damp soft cloth. Avoid synthetic cleaners, baby wipes, and brushes with synthetic bristles, all of these can stain or dry out the vegetable-tanned surface. For stubborn marks, condition with a neutral leather balm after cleaning.

Which conditioner should I use?

Any neutral, quality leather balm. Test on a small, inconspicuous spot first. We don't sell our own conditioner (yet), but any neutral balm without dyes or silicones will work. Avoid mink oil, it can darken veg-tan leather unevenly.

Should I condition my Zando wallet?

Yes, lightly, every few months. Condition keeps the leather supple and helps it develop an even patina. Don't overdo it; a thin layer rubbed in and allowed to absorb is better than a heavy coat. Test on a small spot first.

Does Zando leather have a smell?

New vegetable-tanned leather has a natural earthy smell from the tree bark and plant extracts used in tanning. It's a characteristic of the tanning process, not a chemical smell. As the leather ages and develops a patina, the smell mellows. If you've ever smelled a real leather-bound book, it's similar.

How do I break in a new leather wallet?

Use it. Vegetable-tanned leather softens with handling, body heat, and time in a pocket. There's no special break-in process, daily carry is what develops the patina and the personal fit. The first week it'll feel a little stiff; by the end of the first month it'll feel like yours.

Can I use baby wipes on Zando leather goods?

No. Baby wipes and other synthetic cleaners contain chemicals that can stain or dry out vegetable-tanned leather. Use a dry or barely-damp soft cloth only, and condition with a neutral leather balm if needed. This is one of the most common ways people accidentally damage veg-tan leather.

Shipping & Delivery

Where do you ship?

We currently ship to New Zealand and Australia only. We're planning to expand to other regions in the future, but as of today those are the only two destinations we serve. If you're outside NZ or Australia, please check back later or email contact@zando.co.nz to be notified when we ship to your country.

How long until my order ships?

Because every piece is handcrafted to order, please allow up to two weeks for us to make your item before it leaves the workshop. Once it's dispatched, we'll send you a tracking number so you can follow its journey.

How long does NZ delivery take?

Once your order ships, NZ delivery usually takes two to five business days. You'll get a tracking number by email as soon as the package leaves the workshop.

Do you offer international shipping?

Yes, to Australia only at this time. Typical transit times to Australia are five to ten business days after dispatch. We're planning to add more international destinations in the future, but we don't have a date yet. If you'd like to be notified when we ship to your country, email contact@zando.co.nz.

Can I pick up my order locally in Auckland?

No. ZANDO is an online-only retailer and doesn't offer local pickup. The workshop is a private home studio, not a storefront. All orders are shipped to the address you provide at checkout.

Custom & Personal

Can I order a custom wallet?

Sometimes, it depends on the current production schedule. Email your idea to contact@zando.co.nz and we'll let you know if it's something we can take on. Custom orders take longer than standard pieces because they're designed from scratch, and pricing depends on the complexity.

Can I get a Zando wallet customized or personalized?

Yes. Personalisation is available, including monogramming, embossing, and custom colour requests in some cases. Email contact@zando.co.nz with what you have in mind and we'll confirm what's possible within the current schedule.

We don't have a formal multi-year warranty document, but we stand behind every piece we make.
